He’s set up as a character who really cares for them, and was willing to prostitute himself in order to take care of them rather than them going into foster homes/adoption. Shawn looks after his two little sisters.

This part really grosses me out and is what tips me over. So all convicted criminals are sexual abusers huh? But not you.? And then Derek had the audacity to say men who have been convicted criminals don’t usually “ask” before taking what they want. I know some people like dub-con or non-con and that’s fine, but on top of the abuse of power, the rapey vibes were not okay. Multiple times throughout the book Shawn tells Derek to stop, and says no, or says he’s going too far and Derek doesn’t stop, and or coerces Shawn to keep going. He then went on to use Shawn as a prostitute knowing he was desperate for money to literally survive and keep his scholarship. But he had zero resistance to letting his student suck him off for a grade? Even if we pretend this wasn’t entirely unrealistic and uncharacteristic - it was incredibly wrong and manipulative. Derek was meant to be famous for being a great professor, caring about his work, pulling a lot of research grants, a real hardass teacher. I don’t have anything against this trope between two consenting adults tbh, but it was not okay in this book. It looked pretty highly rated on GR tooīut guys, this book was not okay, and I’m open to anyone who disagrees but I just wanted to share my thoughts I’ve been recommended this author a lot so i thought I’d give it a go. To preface: For anyone who likes these books, I’m not trying to shame you, especially with the student trope and non-consent because I know some people like it written like this - but I do think the dealing with children was undeniably wrong.
