On a deeper level, it's about facing your fears and standing up for the truth even when no one else believes you.I haven’t read any other works by George MacDonald before this novel has been on my reading list for a while. Other than those few qualms, I think it's a wonderful tale, full of magic, with a classic good vs evil plot. "It was foolish indeed-thus to run farther and farther from all who could help her, as if she had been seeking a fit spot for the goblin creature to eat her in his leisure but that is the way fear serves us: it always sides with the thing we are afraid of."
